Industry veteran, co-founder of CopCorp Licensing and executive vice president of Knockout Licensing, Robert C. Postal passed away on September 28 at his home in New York City.
In a service held for the licensing industry personality, a eulogy was delivered by his wife Carole to those who had been close to the industry character.
"CopCorp Licensing, Knockout Licensing and many throughout the licensing industry mourn the loss of licensing pioneer Robert C. Postal. Bob, as he was known to friends and colleagues, passed away September 28 at his home in New York City.
"Bob Postal was born in 1940 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where his father ran a sweater mill. As a young man, Bob began his career as a caterer in Hollywood – Roberts of Hollywood – and running the banquet room at Cantor’s Fairfax in Los Angeles before returning to the East Coast and serving in the Army Reserves for six years where he was still a chef to the stars…four star, three star, and two star generals along with the men at Fort Dix, NJ.
"Bob’s keen sense of design, merchandising, experience running a business and knack for numbers – he could do calculations in his head faster than most kids with calculators – soon landed him a job in the apparel industry.
"In the 1970s, Mr. Postal was one of the first to move to India, China, Japan and Korea to import fabric and make clothes.
"After returning stateside, Bob started apparel company Mayfair Industries and attended his first licensing show (Atlantic City, 1983) where he acquired two licenses - Bugs Bunny and Betty Boop – for $2,500 a piece.
"Mickey Mouse followed in 1984 and Mayfair quickly grew from a tiny Made In The USA apparel company to a $100 million corporation – holding licenses for The Simpsons, California Raisins, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many more - in just a few short years.
"In 1988, Bob went to Turner Broadcasting to talk to someone about the license for the Wizard of Oz. That someone turned out to be his future wife, Carole. After leaving Mayfair in 1991, Bob encouraged Carole to leave corporate life and start CopCorp – a retail consulting company that soon became a full-service licensing agency with clients including It’s Happy Bunny, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, among others.
In 2012, social media led Bob to get “LinkedIn” with fellow licensing agent Tamra Knepfer, eventually leading to Tamra and Carole joining forces as Knockout Licensing.
Along the way, Bob helped mentor young talent and teach them about the business of licensing and – as an artist himself with an obvious interest in animation, cartoons, and comic books – served on the board and as an active volunteer for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City.
Bob was also a long-time donor to and supporter of K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers."
