The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has become Lionsgate UK’s biggest ever UK opening, reports Screen.
The blockbuster sequel enjoyed a debut of £12.2m including £2.1m in previews and £300,000 coming from midnight screenings on Wednesday, November 20th.
This opening is more than double the £4.9m debut managed by the first film, which went on to make £24m in the UK.
Catching Fire is also now the third biggest debut of 2013, falling behind Despicable Me’s £14.9m and Iron Man 3’s £13.7m.
The sequel can look forward to relatively little competition in the way of blockbusters debuting this weekend, with the only fresh saturation releases being Sony’s Carrie, eOne’s animation Free Birds, with Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, Fox’s Bullett Raja and Universal’s The Best Man Holiday getting wide releases.
