Magic Light Pictures to bring Donaldson and Scheffler’s The Highway Rat book to TV

Magic Light Pictures is gearing to launch an animated adaptation of the popular children’s book The Highway Rat in time or Christmas 2017.

The BAFTA award-winning production company is already working on the small screen adaptation of the book written and illustrated by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

The animated half hour will be produced by Michael Rose and Martin Pope of Magic Light Pictures, with animation services once again provided by Triggerfish Animation in Cape Town.

The half hour animated special will follow the story of a greedy rat who tyrannises animals along the highway, as he steals their food. The show will premiere on BBC One next Christmas.

The Highway Rat will mark the fifth adaptation by Magic Light Pictures of a Donaldson and Scheffler book, having premiered Stick Man on BBC One last Christmas.

“We are delighted to be in production with our next Donaldson and Scheffler title for BBC One,” said Michael Rose, co-founder of Magic Light Pictures.

“Julia and Axel have given us another brilliant story to work from – a swashbuckling tale of bandits and biscuits for all the family to enjoy.”
