Egmont Publishing Group is to launch four peek-through novelty board books based on the Animaru brand.

Created by Sophie Hinton, Animaru is a universe of animal characters, inspired by her love of all things Japanese.

Egmont has the global publishing rights and will release the four books - which are aimed at children aged 18 months to three years and cost £5.99 each - from July 2013.

"We instantly fell in love with the bold, bright and contemporary look and feel of Animaru," said Sarah Bates, publishing director at EPG. "We knew immediately that Sophie's beautiful images would translate wonderfully into books and the subtle humour present in all 300+ Animaru personalities provides us with a wealth of story ideas."

Creator Hinton added: "I'm so excited about seeing Animaru in books."
