The Guardian and The Observer newspapers are to run a Retro Comic Collection giveaway every day for a week, beginning this weekend (September 12th).
The promotion - secured by DC Thomson and Start Licensing - has been trailed in the newspaper and online and will be featured on nationwide radio ads. Seven titles will be involved: The Beano, The Dandy, Jackie, Roy of the Rivers, Whizzer & Chips, Bunty and Tammy, with one issue given away every day for a week.
The Guardian also ran an in-depth feature on comics in last Saturday's paper and online as part of its promotion.
This included The Guardian asking a number of celebrities to nominate their favourite comic character.
"This promotion demonstrates the enduring popularity of classic comics and a genuine fondness that exists in the UK for titles like The Beano and The Dandy," said Ian Downes, MD of Start Licensing. "Licensees such as Wild & Wolf, Fine Digital Print, Hype and More For Your Store have recognised this and have used classic comic art to create fantastic stand out products.
"As someone who still reads The Beano on the train in the morning, I am looking forward to seeing my fellow travellers reading comics next week. I am sure this clever promotion will revive many happy memories and, of course, benefit our licensing efforts."
