Mercis launches the Miffy Design Challenge to encourage artistic flare in students

Students from across the globe are to unite over the work of the artists and graphic designer, Dick Bruna, as the next generation of creatives take part in the Miffy Design Challenge.

In collaboration with five leading design academies from five countries across three continents, 100 students will take part in a design challenge inspired by the work of Bruna, and his famous creation, Miffy.

Having been influenced himself by the work and techniques used by artists such as Matisse, Léger, Picasso and Braque, Bruna nowadays inspires others with his Dutch design. The driving principle behind the Miffy Design Challenge is to encourage artistic evolution in students coming up through the ranks of graphic design today.

Over his own career, Bruna’s strive for the perfect form saw him design over 2,000 pocketbook covers, posters and logos and ultimately create his most well-known character Miffy. His journey culminated in signature style illustrations and over 125 original picture books.

In recognition of the hard work all young artists need to put in, Mercis will reward the winning designs by transforming them into exclusive limited-edition signature plush and making them available through selected stores around the world for a limited time.

A panel of jurors from participating schools, including well-known artists Massimo Giancon and Ronald van der Kemp, will guide the students and select the winners. Students from various disciplines will participate and to further stimulate the creativity, have been asked to incorporate simplification, sustainability and material safety into their designs.

This project aims to show the design student’s perspective, give room for their own imagination, pay attention to the feasibility of design and to offer students a platform to showcase their creations.     

The designs of all the participants will form the basis for ‘the original Miffy Design Collection’ which will be on display throughout 2020.
