Nerd Corps Entertainment has partnered with Chinese production and distribution company, Ciwen Media to manage the popular boys property, Slugterra across China.
The firm will be responsible for merchandise, consumer products, TV rights and non-exclusive digital media, as well as co-develop new content for the brand in 2014.
The new content slated for development in the new year includes a 90 minute movie scheduled for theatrical release in China with deals in the works for North American and worldwide releases.
The movie will introduce a new hero to the story, joining characters Eli and the Shane Gang to fight evil in the world of Slugterra.
The second movie is slated for a late summer 2014 release and joins the recently announced 44 minute TV movie special, Ghoul from Beyond.
Ken Faier, president of Nerds Corps Entertainment, said: "The children’s animation market in China is growing rapidly, and we hope to grow as creators along with it.
"This partnership with Ciwen offers us an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese storytelling traditions, evaluate children’s media consumption habits, explore new platforms for content distribution, and gain valuable insights for developing and co-developing new content to build truly global kids properties that also work on a local level.
"We see this as a true partnership with opportunities not only for Slugterra, but potentially future properties as well."
Sean Chu, VP of Ciwen Kids, Ciwen Media Group, added: "Slugterra raises the bar of today’s TV animation in terms of storytelling, visuals, production technology and transmedia content creation.
"And I find it represents a paradigm shift in that an action packed boy show can be free from violence. We at Ciwen are confident that Eli Shane fully embodies Chinese boys’ understanding of heroism.
"Speaking of the Slugterra movie project, our aspiration is to introduce an original oriental hero into a successful hit, who will be recognised and like by the international audience."
