The first book in The Red Harlequin series, Of Masks and Chromes, launched on WattPad this month, racking up over 30,000 reads in two weeks.
This helped the book reach 12th place in the adventure/fantasy category and the launch is being backed up by the release of an accompanying hip hop single Behind the Mask on digital jukeboxes in March.
Following the launch of the single, a music album based on series, which ‘combines contemporary Hip Hop sounds with a haunting fantasy feel evocative of the series’ dark themes’, will launch in autumn 2014.
As well as an accompanying album, a feature film is also being developed based on the series.
“I was looking for a way to voice my indignation for unfair systems that are highly corrupt and deeply unjust," said author Roberto Ricci.
"I wanted to galvanise young people to think about these issues and believe that platforms such as WattPad, digital jukeboxes, film, and social media are an invaluable place reach this audience.”
The coming of age fantasy novel series is aimed at 12-18 year olds in ‘the The Hunger Games and Harry Potter demographic’.
