Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that an all-new trilogy of original Star Wars films is on the way, headed up by The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson.
Little is known about the new trilogy, except that it will debut after the current Star Wars film trilogy has concluded in 2019 and will introduce an all-new cast of characters for a story unconnected with the current storyline.
"[The new series will] introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored," said Iger on a conference call discussing Disney’s 2017 financial results.
Iger also confirmed that a Star Wars TV series is in development, which will exclusively premiere through Disney’s planned streaming service, set to launch in 2019.
Fans now have an answer for why the director who’s work on Breaking Bad and Looper garnered critical acclaim would not return to direct the final episode in the current trilogy following the departure of Colin Trevorrow. This untitled instalment will be helmed by JJ Abrams, while Ron Howard has taken up directing duties on next year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.
