Pokémon Movie, Detective Pikachu taps Goosebumps director Rob Letterman

The highly anticipated Pokémon Movie, Detective Pikachu, has taken another step towards reality as the title finds its director in Rob Letterman.

The filmmaker and Goosebumps director has been tapped to helm the project, currently going through the writing process spearheaded by Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman.

The live-action film from Legendary and The Pokémon Company is tipped to centre on Detective Pikachu, a new character and story in the Pokémon universe, having first been introduced in the Japanese video game.

According to reports, Legendary has fast-tracked the project for a production start in 2017. Universal will handle distribution of the film outside of japan, while The Pokémon Company’s movie collaborator Toho will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan.

Letterman’s previous works includes the likes of Goosebumps, Monsters vs Aliens and Shark Tale.
