The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been voted the ‘ultimate book for children under five’ in a recent Booktrust poll.
Readers of all ages voted for their top books for children under 14 with the popular title from Eric Carle reaching top of the under-five list and fourth overall behind Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, The Hunger Games and the BFG.
Celebrating its 45th anniversary next year, the children’s title – following the tale of a caterpillar as it transforms into a butterfly – enjoys a vast licensing portfolio, including recent additions Sapona and East Coast Nursery.
Sapona is set to launch a range of Very Hungry Caterpillar toiletries, including bubble bath, toothbrush, body wash and hand soap in March 2014.
Meanwhile, East Coast Nursery will be launching a line of blankets, quilts, curtains, Moses baskets and changing mats in 2014.
Rob Wijeratna, joint managing director, Rocket Licensing, said: "The result of this poll is further proof of the continuing affection that The Very Hungry Caterpillar inspires in every new generation of young fans.
"Those young fans and their parents are also driving a very strong market for Very Hungry Caterpillar products in many categories.
"The licensing programme continues to grow and Sapona and East Coast Nursery – both leading names in their fields – are very welcome."
Sapona and East Coast Nursery join a raft of recent signings including Ravensburger, Egmont and Dreamtex, alongside 26 licensees developing ranges with new style guide art ahead of the book’s birthday next year.
