Unpublished title celebrates 50th year of multi-million selling international author.

PUBLISHING MONTH: HarperCollins signs rights for Richard Scarry title

HarperCollins has signed the world rights for a previously unpublished title from world-renowned author, Richard Scarry.

Featuring one of Scarry’s most popular characters, Lowly Worm, the book is titled Best Lowly Worm Book Ever.

It will be published in October this year in hardback and will kick-off the celebrations to mark Scarry’s 50th anniversary year.

The unfinished manuscript was discovered by the author’s son Huck Scarry and is thought to date from around 1990, only years before Scarry’s death in 1994.

Artist, Huck, has taken on completing and colouring the illustrations in time for it’s publication.

Neil Dunnicliffe, editorial director, HarperCollins UK, said: "It was like unearthing buried treasure when I first unwrapped this original manuscript from Richard Scarry.

"It has been wonderful to work with Huck Scarry to complete the book and it is tremendously exciting to publish this newly-discovered classic.

"I know that the many fans of Richard Scarry, new and old, will be delighted to see this charming and funny title published for the very first time."

Huck Scarry said: "Not too long ago Neil Dunnicliffe asked me if I knew of any unpublished work of my father’s.

"I made a quick rummage through some old portfolios leaning under my father’s drawing table at his studio in Gstaad and found a number of pencil sketches done on tracing paper.

"Among these looked what seemed to be a complete book in sketched form: Best Lowly Worm Book Ever.

"It is impossible to say just when my father would have made these sketches, but my guess is sometime around 1990…give or take a few years.

"My father passed away in 1994. So, here, some 23-odd years late, comes the Best Lowly Worm Book Ever."
