Radio Times exhibit to open at Museum of London

A special exhibition is to be held at the Museum of London from August, celebrating 90 years of the Radio Times.

The showcase – which will run from Friday August 2nd to Sunday November 3rd – will take visitors from the BBC’s first radio tranmission to today’s multi-channel offer. They will experience landmark broadcasts, archive clips, broadcast artefacts and original Radio Times photography and artwork.

The exhibition will also feature an exclusive Doctor Who display. Visitors will be able to become a cover star themselves, alongside a life-size Dalek against a backdrop of Westminster Bridge, recreating the 2005 ‘Vote Dalek’ Radio Times cover (pictured).

Other highlights include an illuminating original 1941 Luftwaffe Stadtplan von London map, which plots Radio Times’ Waterlows printing plant in Park Royal, London, as a Nazi air-raid target alongside transport hubs, factories and landmarks.

"To flick through the covers of Radio Times over the past 90 years is to watch a popular history of Britain unfold," said Ben Preston, editor of the Radio Times. "Royal weddings, coronations, the outbreak of war and peace, moon landings and even a victorious World Cup, household names created and stars born – all have graced the cover of Radio Times."

Sharon Ament, Museum of London director, added: "With its roots in London there was a point when no sitting room was without this magazine, it was a weekly ritual to pore over its pages.

"The Museum of London tells the story of the world’s greatest city and its people, and it is Londoners who have led the way as both the producers and consumers of broadcast media. Now Radio Times has a significant presence in another sort of living room – that of a vibrant and buzzing museum. I can’t wait for it to open."
