Olympics boosts John Lewis' weekly sales

Retailer says sales are up because Olympic Games 'feel-good factor' has kicked in.

John Lewis’ weekly sales rose 22.4 per cent year-on-year for the week ending August 4th due to the Olympics.

The retailer said official London 2012 merchandise sales leapt 51 per cent week-on-week. 

“A remarkable week of success in the 2012 Games matched our flying start to the new half year,” read a statement. “Compared to a year ago, the milder weather, new ranges and sporting activity have all driven demand.

“Undoubtedly, the feel-good factor of Team GB's medal success has had a direct impact in uplifting sales, not only in our London shops but also in our branches throughout the country - certainly a great way to start the new half year.

“It is a great way to start the second half and gives us real confidence that we are well positioned for the rest of the year. As with gold medals, we only see the results and not all of the hard work that goes into them. Here, we have done a great job to position ourselves for success.”

John Lewis said it saw strong growth in the gifting sector, as well as a 25.5 per cent increase in its fashion department, with menswear, sports and children’s clothing all performing well.
