Rihanna wins image fight against Topshop

Pop star Rihanna has won a legal battle against Topshop over a t-shirt sold by the retailer that featured an unauthorised image image of her.

BBC News reports that the Court of Appeal in London upheld a ban on the store selling the t-shirt and is now the first successful celebrity case of its kind.

The three appeal judges stated that marketing the item without Rihanna’s approval amounted to ‘passing off’.

The star first sued Topshop’s parent company Arcadia for £3.3m back in 2013 over the t-shirts, with Mr Justice Birss claiming it represented a loss of control over Rihanna’s reputation in the ‘fashion sphere’.

Topshop lawyers had urged the appeal judges to rule that Mr Justice Birss had misunderstood the law on celebrity merchandising but all three judges unanimously dismissed the appeal.
