Roald Dahl named best children’s author by UK poll

A recent nationwide poll of 2,000 adults held by Canon UK saw Roald Dahl named as the nation’s favourite children’s author, coming out on top with over half of the vote.

Canon UK commissioned the research to find a storyteller to spend a year identifying and living 365 new stories from around the world. The results featured some of the world’s most famous authors, songwriters, artists and photographers.

Roald Dahl saw off major competition beating the likes of Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare and the creator of Harry Potter, JK Rowling.

Elsewhere, a poll commissioned by the CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Medals to find out which children’s titles have stood the test of time saw Roald Dahl novels dominate the top three, coming out ahead of Harry Potter and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

“It’s fantastic to see polls such as these from Canon UK and CILIP Carnegie demonstrating that Roald Dahl’s stories are as current and loved today as they have ever been," commented Stephanie Griggs, licensing & design manager at the Roald Dahl Literary Estate. "They continue to deeply resonate with adults who grew up with the books, and are loved by a new generation of children discovering Roald Dahl’s stories for themselves!”
