The 90th anniversary celebrations for the classic animated property, Popeye, are well underway and only growing stronger, thanks to a new fashion-forward, nautical-themed clothing line to arrive courtesy of Scotch & Soda.
The limited edition capsule collection stars Popeye the Sailorman’s nemesis Bluto – or Brutus – as he is known in Scotch & Soda’s hometown of Amsterdam. Brutus takes centre stage across a range of souvenir jackets, while nautical cartoon scribbles decorate shorts, shirting, and more.
The Scotch & Soda Boathouse collection features apparel for men, women and children and includes denims, Hawaiian shirts, overalls and varsity inspired jackets, as well as sweats and hoodies.
“Scotch & Soda has a proven record in bringing innovative products to market, and when they had the original idea to create a nautical collection around Brutus, we knew it would be a hit with fans,” said King Features vice president and general manager, global head of licensing, Carla Silva.
“Their impassioned commitment to developing a unique and authentic vintage look for Brutus was inspiring and is apparent in every design.”
Scotch & Soda’s creative director, Marlou van Engelen, said: “We found this brilliant, vintage Brutus garment on our travels and couldn’t resist the magnetism of this muscly character. Brutus has this powerful, larger-than-life personality.
“He’s Popeye’s arch enemy and always up to something, His character decorates and inspires the designs of our workwear-heavy capsule. He’s our Boathouse mascot.”
With this limited-edition Brutus capsule collection, Scotch & Soda becomes the latest in a string of brands tapping into the Popeye universe, embracing the look and feel of one of the most beloved characters of the last 90 years.
