Sesame Street, LEGO and Disney among Apple TV+ kids’ content launch

Apple TV+ has tapped up the likes of Big Bird and Elmo to help it launch the kids’ content division of its new streaming TV service and Netflix rival.

A new Sesame Street-themed show geared towards teaching kids coding will help make up a raft of new children’s licensed and original content, as Apple now looks to take on the likes of Amazon Prime and Netflix.

This new kids’ show – titled Helpsters –  will focus on coding and will introduce audiences to a new muppet character in the shape of Cody. It will also feature music and dancing.

Apple has backed coding education for a number of years by hosting educational sessions at Apple Stores, funding school programmes and nonprofit initiatives, as well as offering materials through its own learn to code app, Swift Playgrounds.

Alongside the launch of Apple TV+ comes a new subscription gaming service called Apple Arcade. It will include original games from developers such as Disney, LEGO and Cartoon Network. A show reel at launch highlighted new games from Sonic the Hedgehog and Frogger.

Meanwhile, the roster of kids content spanning Sesame Street, PAW Patrol and Daniel Tiger.

Apple’s kids content efforts are being led by Tara Sorensen, as head of creative development, children. Previously she served as head of kids programming at Amazon Studios, and has been both a VP at Sony Pictures Family Entertainment and National Geographic Kids Entertainment.

Apple TV+ has previously detailed a partnership with Sesame Workshop to develop live action and animated shows, and a series based on puppets. It also teamed up with DHX to create new exclusive content for Peanuts.
