SLR Productions and Giggle Garage partnership marks growth strategy for Malaysia’s animation industry

Australia’s SLR Productions has partnered with the Malaysian, women-led kids’ content creators, Giggle Garage to develop a new CGI animated series called Space Nova.

It’s early days for the partnership, but already SLR Productions’ executive producer Suzanne Ryan and Giggle Garage’s executive producers, Juhaidah Joemin and Zeno Gabing, anticipate “creative and financial success” via the collaboration.

Space Nova is guaranteed to be a fun and thrilling space adventure and is providing a great framework for our studios to collaborate both creatively and financially in the future,” said Ryan.

“Today’s announcement with SLR Productions is another solid step in our journey in creating character entertainment properties for family and kids to enjoy around the world. We are inspired by Suzanne and her team’s vision in creating great content and are super excited to partner with them on future projects,” added Giggle Garage’s Zeno Gabing.

Malaysia’s creative content industry has been on a growth trajectory in recent years. Its animation industry now boats more than 38 IPs to have originated from the region, and it has generated more than RM 237m in revenue for the country. Over half of this has been generated from exports to 120 countries.

Malaysia’s communications and multimedia minister, YB Gobind Sing Deo has stated that the Malaysian government will continue to focus on developing its animation ecosystem, which includes talent growth to empower the country’s position as a regional digital content creation hub.

“Giggle Garage, a company helmed by two Sabahans, based in Cyberjaya, has created stories and characters that are travelling around the world,  and symbolises the diversity, skill and talent that makes Malaysia stand out in the digital arena,” he said.

Surina Shukri, chief executive officer of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), added: “This is a testament that the Malaysian creative industry is truly one of the most exciting in the region with original IP creation and animation services being a core driver in this sector.

“It is inspirational to see one of Malaysia’s tech champions, Giggle Garage, produce this series together with SLR Productions, Super RTL, ZDF Enterprises and other key international partners.

“MDEC is at the forefront of our national endeavours towards developing a vibrant digital content and creative tech industry from Malaysia powered by a supportive ecosystem, which will nurture more world-class players.

“Digital content plays an important part of Malaysia’s Digital Economy aspirations, producing wonderful IPs, exporting titles and services worldwide, and providing careers and opportunities for more than 11,590 employees across the sector.”

Space Nova is an original SLR Productions’ programme, commissioned by Super RTL, ABC Australia and Nine Network. It comprises 26 x 24 minute episodes specifically geared to a global six to nine year old audience.

Set in the year 2162, life is a blast for space adventuring siblings, Jet and Adelaide Nova. Along with their parents, Josie and Hugo, these intrepid Aussie astronauts spend their days hopping rogue planets, dodging exploding asteroid belts, surfing solar flares, falling through intergalactic wormholes, avoiding being eaten by all kinds of plantimals and even meeting the odd space slug, all in the name of science.

During a routine research mission, the Novas stumble across an abandoned alien space craft trapped in a Celestial Butterfly. This craft appears to be powered by a rainbow substance that’s so powerful it sends the craft zipping away at speeds humanity never dreamed possible.

But although the Novas were unable to capture the craft, or the ‘Star Dust’ that powered it, they now know that there is an advanced, intelligent species out there, able to travel the universe in the blink of an eye.  If only they can find them…
