Smurfs sequel dethrones The Wolverine in UK box office

Sony’s The Smurfs 2 has taken the No.1 spot in the UK box office, reports Screen.

The 3D sequel which sees the iconic little blue creatures travel to Paris made £3.2m, just below the £3.8m figure achieved by the first film in its opening weekend in the UK.

Elsewhere, Disney and Pixar’s prequel Monsters University made £1.75m to bring its total in the UK to £20.8m. In terms of Pixar performances in the UK, this now pushes the film past Cars and Cars 2.

Universal’s biggest film of the year also continued to engage with cinema audiences this weekend as Despicable Me 2 took another £1.28m bringing the total figure in the UK to £38.44m.

This makes Despicable Me 2 the fourth biggest animation film of all time in the UK, sitting behind Toy Story 3, Shrek 2 and Toy Story 2.
