Sony Creative Products preps ‘two major IPs’ for Japanese market

Sony Creative Products is looking to take the Japanese market by storm this year, armed with a slate of properties highlighted a ‘big hitters’ for the market.

The studio is preparing to exhibit at both Licensing Japan this April 4 to 6 and Licensing Expo Japan this April 25 to 27, where it will showcase the leading properties Gaspard et Lisa and Juichi Yoshikawa.

Gaspard et Lisa is a French animated property that follows the story of animal friends living in Paris. Having originated in France, the property has inspired 40 picture books and an animated programme broadcast in over 80 countries.

The property has seen enormous success in Japan, where the picture books have enjoyed sales of over two million to date and a strong licensing campaign that spans fashion, stationery, mobile accessories and petcare. A theme park, La Ville de Gaspard et Lisa opened in 2013 in Yamanashi, 100 km from Tokyo.

SCP will showcase the property at Licensing Japan as Gaspard et Lisa prepares to enter a new phase of its programme. Exhibitions promoting the Gaspard et Lisa picture books have toured Japan over the past year. A live stage show is now due to open while the firm has recently embarked on a new licensing and merchandising collaboration with Sanrio.

Meanwhile, Juichi Yoshikawa is a Japanese calligraphy artist for whom SCP has acquired worldwide agent rights through an agreement with his management at Hasshoo. Yoshikawa will be the highlight of the SCP stand at Licensing Expo Japan 2018.

Sony will be looking at a number of opportunities to develop an international licensing campaign around Juichi Yoshikawa, highlighting not only his work but the artist himself through events, promotions and selected appearances.

Takeshi Nakamura, global business group licensing manager, Sony Creative Products, said: “Our appearance at these two major licensing events will highlight the diversity of our product portfolio – a diversity clearly underlined by our focus on Gaspard et Lisa, a stylish animated cartoon with multi-generational appeal and Juichi Yoshikawa, a true artist but also an internationally known, larger than life personality.

“We are, of course, looking forward to telling visitors to both shows more about these amazing properties.”
