Disney Interactive announces a new Star Wars game for mobiles, while Disney Stores welcome Star Wars merch for first time.

Star Wars licensing activity enters overdrive

Disney is thrusting Star Wars into overdrive with a raft of new licensing activity, including the launch of a new game for mobile devices.

Last week, Disney Interactive revealed Star Wars: Commander – a free to play combat strategy game.

The game, aimed at the ‘mid-core’ Star Wars audience, features a line-up of classic characters and vehicles, including Han Solo, Chewbacca and TIE Fighters.

The New York Times reports that alongside the game’s announcement release, further Star Wars activity includes the launch of a new animated movie, Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, airing on The Disney Channel this October.

Disney XD will then roll out the related Star Wars Rebels series in the following weeks.

Elsewhere, Disney Stores have recently added Star Wars merchandise to its shelves for the first time, while Star Wars food is beginning to hit retailers across the US this week.

Disney theme parks are also stepping up the Star Wars celebrations with construction plans for Star Wars themed lands under way.

The Walt Disney Company purchased Lucasfilm for a cool $4.05 billion in October 2012.

The mobile game, Star Wars: Commander is now available to download via Disney.com and StarWars.com.
