After 20 years with Dark Horse Comics, the franchise returns to Marvel and retailers have already pre-ordered over one million copies of the issue.

Star Wars returns to Marvel comics with ‘biggest selling issue of last two decades’

The hype around Star Wars is already building as the franchise’ comic book series makes its return to Marvel with a million-selling issue.

Previously owned by Dark Horse Comics, the intergalactic comic book is planning a big return to the studio, with more than one million copies already pre-ordered by retailers.

Star Wars #1 is now on track to become the biggest selling single issue of the last two decades.

Out on January 14th, the first comic in the new series is set between episodes IV and V of the films – Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back – and follows the Rebel struggle with the Empire after the destruction of the Death Star.

“It’s being called the biggest release of 2015 – and is expected to sell a million copies,” Danie Ware, Forbidden Planet, told The Guardian.

“It’s a ‘coming home’ for Star Wars – back to Marvel for the first time in 20 years. It’s also the first look at the new storyline and the centre of a Venn diagram of many different ages and kinds of fans.”

Written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by John Cassaday, the new series intends to reboot the Star Wars extended universe that was wiped following Disney’s acquisition of the space-opera franchise.
