Star Wars: The Force Awakens has dethroned Avatar as the top film of all time in North America, according to Disney.
The latest installment in the sci-fi saga surpassed the $760.5m milestone achieved by Avatar across the US on Wednesday, January 6th.
However, James Cameron’s 2009 title, Avatar still holds the global sales record with just under $2.8bn.
Last month, Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the fastest film to take $1bn at the global box office, the film also scored the biggest US Christmas Day box office taking in history with $49.3m.
The JJ Abrams directed movie also smashed the record for the biggest box office debut weekend globally, with ticket sales of $529m.
The seventh film in the Star Wars catalogue is due to open in China on Saturday, January 9th, which according to analysts, will give the film another significant boost.
