Spotlight to represent Samurai Rabbit

2022 may be the Year of the Tiger but it is also shaping up to be a big year for the rabbits of the highly anticipated Netflix animated kids series Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, and the long-running and award-winning Stan Sakai comic book series Usagi Yojimbo that inspired it.

Spotlight Licensing has been appointed by Gaumont to launch and manage the global merchandise licensing programme for Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles (which debuted on Netflix April 28).

“We are incredibly proud of Samurai Rabbit! It’s a fun, funny, action packed, gorgeous, animated kids series that younger viewers will love. Creator Stan Sakai was involved every step of the way so we hope his comic fans will love it as well,” says Terry Kalagian, Executive Vice President of Creative Content at Gaumont US.

Spotlight has simultaneously been tapped to handle global merchandise licensing for Sakai’s creator-owned Usagi Yojimbo.

Usagi Yojimbo’s Miyamoto Usagi is an ancestor of Samurai Rabbit’s teenage star Yuichi Usagi  and – because Miyamoto is such an integral figure in Yuichi’s life and story – it made sense to consolidate and coordinate licensing efforts for both the series and comics with one agency,” says Sakai, who is an executive producer of the Samurai Rabbit series and has remained involved throughout development to ensure the show would be well-crafted and respectful of Japanese culture.

“We are thrilled to be working with Gaumont and Stan Sakai to find the right licensing partners in the U.S. and around the world for each property, Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles and Usagi Yojimbo, either separately or together if appropriate,” says Spotlight Licensing President Carole Postal.

Spotlight is actively seeking licensing partners across a broad range of product categories including not only toys and games but also clothing, costumes, accessories, figurines, collectibles, and other items. As global agent, Spotlight will also be looking for evaluating potential licensing partners and sub-agents around the world.

Forbidden Planet teams with Gaumont to launch F is for Family apparel and accessories across the UK

The French production and distribution studio, Gaumont, has partnered with the UK’s pop culture retailer Forbidden Planet to launch a new line of branded merchandise based on the Netflix Original animated series, F is for Family.

The high street retailer and specialist in the pop culture and geek culture sector, Forbidden Planet will kickstart the partnership with the launch of a range of apparel and giftware including t-shirts, hoodies, accessories such as sew-on patches, enamel keyrings and pin badges.

In addition to this, the ’70s themed animated series will lend its characters to an exclusive line of giftware with art prints, postcards packs, mugs, tea towels, magnets, and travel pass holders. The line is available from this month across the Forbidden Planet stores throughout the UK.

The launch of the new F is for Family line follows the success of the series’ fourth season, with a fifth and final season having just been announced. It coincides with an interview featuring series creator Bill Burr on Forbidden Planet’s new video platform, FPTV.

Evolution USA, Gaumont’s global licensing and brand management agency across the title brokered the partnership.

Anthony Garnon, licensing and special projects manager at Forbidden Planet, added: “It’s time to take away those 2020 blues with this fantastic range of merchandise. F is for Family is a genuinely laugh out loud series, and I’m honoured to welcome the show and its fans into Forbidden Planet.

“We have got lots of great designs, covering all the fan-favourite characters and more – with additional items coming in 2021 as we plan to grow the range substantially for the next season.”

From the executive producer Vince Vaughn and created by the popular stand-up comedian Bill Burr with Emmy winner Michael Price, F is for Family is an animated half-hour adult comedy that follows the Murphy family back to the 1970s when kids roamed wild, beer flowed freely, and nothing came between a man and his TV.

Gaumont appoints Michelle Sullivan to role of VP creative executive

Gaumont, the film company and producer of the award-winning Narcos series and the upcoming animated series, Do, Re, & Mi, and High in the Clouds, is expanding its animation and family efforts with the appointment of Michelle Sullivan.

Sullivan most recently served as development executive for Amazon Studios, where she helped develop and oversee the production of Amazon Kids Originals scripted animated series, including Clifford The Big Red Dog, Click Clack Moo, and Bookaboo. Prior to that she led the National Geographic’s kids and family digital initiatives.

Sullivan will officially join the US team in August this year as VP, creative executive based in Gaumont’s Los Angeles offices. She will report to Terry Kalagian, SVP, creative development, animation and family and work alongside Kimberly Dennison, VP of creative development to source projects to be developed into animated and live action series.

“I am so excited to have Michelle Sullivan joining our team,” said Kalagian. “Her creative vision is aligned with Gaumont’s and the energy and expertise she brings to the group will further inspire us in our ongoing quest to develop meaningful stories and compelling characters.”

Among the upcoming series from Gaumont is the animated feature, High in the Clouds, developed together with Paul McCartney for Netflix.
