LEGO Group debuts Star Wars Luke Skywalker Landspeeder set

The LEGO Group has announced the new LEGO Star Wars Luke Skywalker Landspeeder set – the latest in the LEGO Ultimate Collector Series (UCS). A faithful recreation of Luke’s battered vehicle, the new 1,890-piece model is designed to appeal to Star Wars and LEGO fans alike.

In the Star Wars universe, X-34 Landspeeders are typical civilian transports, designed to withstand the roughest terrains. The Landspeeder was first seen in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Luke used the vehicle extensively as part of his farm work, travelling across Tatooine’s harsh deserts. Accompanied by C-3PO, Luke used the Landspeeder to locate R2-D2, when he was discovered by Obi-Wan Kenobi.  It was also the vehicle they were travelling in when Obi-Wan used a Jedi mind trick to get past stormtroopers guarding entry into Mos Eisley. Eventually Luke sold the Landspeeder to pay for his transport to the planet Alderaan.

The LEGO Star Wars Luke Skywalker Landspeeder building set is 49cm long when complete and features the two-seater cockpit, the turbine engine without a cover, the iconic curved cockpit windscreen and an exclusive C-3PO minifigure (with 2K moulded legs and a side print) and Luke minifigure – complete with lightsaber.

The new set forms part of the LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series sets, which also include the Millennium Falcon, the A-Wing, the Republic Gunship, and the recently released AT-AT.

The Landspeeder building set has been created by LEGO set designer César Carvalhosa Soares, who says: “It’s been an amazing adventure creating Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder in LEGO brick form. It is such an iconic vehicle in the Star Wars saga. We’ve ensured no detail has been forgotten and have even included some of the scratches.  The finished product makes an incredible display and is the perfect addition to the UCS collection.”

The LEGO Star Wars Landspeeder set is available for LEGO VIPs (LEGO.com/VIP) from 1 May 2022 and everyone from 4 May 2022 from LEGO Stores and at LEGO.com/star-wars, at the recommended retail price of $199.99 / £174.99 / € 199.99.

LEGO unveils the LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship in latest Ultimate Collector’s line up

A new LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship construction set has become the latest addition to the LEGO Group’s Ultimate Collector’s line-up, having triumphed in the public vote via the company’s LEGO Ideas platform.

The Republic Gunship rose supreme when LEGO invited fans to vote on the top three requested sets across the fan engagement and creativity platform, securing an impressive 30,000 votes, accounting for 58 per cent of all votes cast.

Inspired by Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and featured in the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the new set weighs in at 3,292 pieces and includes LEGO Star Wars minifigures of Jedi Master Mace Windu, and a Clone Trooper Commander.

The challenge of creating the Star Wars Republic Gunship in LEGO brick form was given to designer, Hans Schlömer who used his experience – including designing the UCS Millennium Falcon and UCS A-wing – to complete the task.

To date, the LEGO Group has developed around 150 LEGO Star Wars sets inspired by the prequel trilogy films (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith), with this set being the third UCS prequel-themed build.

Others in the line up have included Darth Maul and Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter.

The Gunship’s large free-swinging doors on both sides are some of the largest moving parts ever created in a LEGO Star Wars build and the set is completely open beyond the nose portion. Given the size of the LEGO Star Wars ship, a supportive LEGO Technic frame has been incorporated, hidden by the exterior panels and allowing Clone Troopers to load for their next mission via lift arms on the passenger compartment doors.

Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, creative lead of LEGO Star Wars at the LEGO Group, said: “Our fans are always coming up with concepts and ideas for the LEGO Star Wars range – so it was great to give them the opportunity to let their voices be heard and choose the next UCS set.

“There is always an enormous responsibility to deliver a quality design, and the set that Hans has crafted is a triumph, particularly the size. We knew our fans would want to display this model but we didn’t want to compromise on the scale versus the ability to exhibit it. I can’t wait to see how the fans incorporate the set into their Star Wars collections.”

The LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship set will be available starting on August 1, 2021 via LEGO Stores and LEGO.com and will retail for the recommended price of £329.

LEGO reveals its Dark Side with the launch of its LEGO Star Wars Helmets collection

The LEGO Group has unveiled three new LEGO Star Wars construction sets for adult builders to recreate some of the most iconic designs from the Star Wars galaxy, including two new additions to the LEGO Star Wars helmet collection.

First revealed last year, the helmet collection features a bust inspired by Darth Vader and a helmet designed in the likeness of a Scout Trooper. Making up today’s launch is the new model honouring the Imperial Probe Droid.

The range has been designed with the LEGO’s community of adult builders in mind, allowing fans to build, display, and pay homage to the Dark Lord of the Sith. The LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Helmet is an 834 brick build, the Scout Trooper helmet is a 471 brick set, and the LEGO Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid weighs in at 638 pieces.

“Some of our favourite Star Wars characters have the most profound, intimidating on-screen presences, despite the fact that you can’t see their facial expressions,” said Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, creative director, LEGO Star Wars. “In recreating the sinister helmets of Darth Vader and the Scout Trooper, it was important to capture the details and essential features that people around the world will recognise, even those who aren’t too familiar with the Star Wars galaxy.

“I think all three display sets are extremely cool and I hope fans will enjoy the building process and be thrilled to display them once complete.”

Passionate builders can enjoy some time to relax as they take on these complex creative challenges, recreating every authentic detail in true LEGO style. When done with the build, the models can be displayed with a bespoke plaque.

The sets will be priced between £44.99 to £59.99 and will be available for pre-order from March 25th, 2021 from LEGO.com and other retailers, and on general sale globally from April 26th.

LEGO sees strong growth in 2020 led by innovative partnerships with cross-audience appeal

A portfolio of strong licences and a cross-generational appeal to kid and adult audiences through the blend of physical-digital play has helped The LEGO Group to a strong year of growth over 2020, as the Danish toy maker reports a 21 per cent growth in consumer sales compared to the year prior.

LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Super Mario have been named among some of the company’s best-selling licensed ranges throughout the past year, as the group’s tie-up with the Nintendo property and its innovative lean into the mix of physical and digital play, become one of its best-selling themed sets.

LEGO Friends has also been credited with helping the group to a successful year of growth that saw revenue at the firm increase 13 per cent to DKK 43.7 billion, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

LEGO’s CEO has attributed the success to the ‘passion, creativity, and resilience’ of its team who has “worked tirelessly to keep the world playing” over the course of the challenging year.

As a result, LEGO has seen operating profit hit DKK 12.9 billion, an increase of 19 per cent compared to the year prior, while the brand’s global market share grew both across the world and in its largest 12 markets.

Consumer sales in all market groups grew double digits, with especially strong growth in China, the Americas, Western Europe and Asia Pacific.

Growth in operating profit was driven by strong sales and offset by strategic investments and increased distribution costs associated with shipping products globally following the temporary, enforced closure of manufacturing sites in Mexico and China. Net profit grew 19 percent to DKK 9.9 billion, while free cash flow was strong at DKK 11.5 billion.

CEO Niels B Christiansen said: “For the past two years we’ve made large-scale investments in initiatives designed to support long-term growth. In 2020, we began to see the benefits of these, especially in e-commerce and product innovation.

“We know children and adults love the LEGO brick and that will always be the heart of our business. But today’s children are growing up in a digital world and they effortlessly blend online and physical play.

“We are excited to offer them safe, exciting play experiences that are fun and offer new ways to learn and be creative.”

The LEGO Group also continued to invest in its brand through its global brand campaign Rebuild the World and in 2020 was named the world’s most loved brand.

On top of this, the company’s omnichannel retail system has supported growth in its partners’ and its own channels as physical stores were forced to temporarily close to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The number of visits to LEGO.com doubled compared with the prior year, while the company continued its global store expansion programme. During 2020, it opened 134 new retail stores, including 91 stores in China, bringing the total number of LEGO branded stores globally at the end of 2020 to 678.

The company plans to open a further 120 stores in 2021, 80 of those in China.

“People are looking for unique and memorable physical brand experiences, so we will continue to invest to expand our global retail footprint, as well as elevate our instore shopping experiences,” continued Christiansen.

“This approach strengthens our brand, creating a positive impact across all channels. We will also further build our e-commerce capabilities to support online shopping on our own and our partners’ platforms.”

The LEGO Group concluded its financial report with an update on its initiative to positively impact on the future of play. Last year, the firm detailed that up to $400 million will be invested over three years in sustainability initiatives, focusing on learning through play, reducing its environmental impact, and ensuring inclusive workplaces.

The company has begun trials of paper bags to replace single-use plastic packaging in its products and announced a commitment to reducing its absolute carbon emissions by 37 per cent by 2032.

During the year, it also partnered with a range of organisations to support its efforts and will work with UN Women to empower women in all of its workplaces, as well as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to explore circular business models.

Christiansen concluded: “The challenges facing this generation of children are urgent and complex and must be addressed through a collective effort by companies, governments and experts.

“We look forward to joining forces with children, parents, colleagues and partners to help shape a bright future for generations to come.”
