Spin Master Entertainment announces new animated series, Vida the Vet

Spin Master Entertainment has announced the upcoming launch of an all-new animated series, Vida the Vet. The show is the thirteenth series to date from the creators of the preschool powerhouse franchise PAW Patrol and last year’s worldwide box office success PAW Patrol: The Movie.

Season one of the series, comprising 52 x 11-minute episodes, will debut on BBC’s CBeebies and streaming platform BBC iPlayer in the UK and Corus Entertainment’s Treehouse and streaming platform STACKTV in Canada in autumn 2023, expanding to a raft of international broadcasting partners to be announced at a later date.

Vida the Vet follows 10-year-old Vida, an animal doctor who nurtures the charming and silly woodland creatures who live outside her home. Is there a fox with a sprained paw? A turtle with an itchy toe? A tiger with an aching tooth? Then Vida is the vet for the job. With quick thinking, a doctor’s intuition and the help of her closest friends, Vida helps adorable animals and makes sure they get the care they need.

“Spin Master Entertainment has deep experience creating award-winning content and engaging stories for preschoolers that are infused with a sense of play,” says Jennifer Dodge, Spin Master’s President of Entertainment. “Featuring a gorgeous, colourful world with a distinct look and feel, Vida the Vet will enchant preschoolers and their families with curious, courageous and caring stories about a little girl and her animal neighbours who show us how to take care of ourselves and others.”

Executive produced by Jennifer Dodge, along with Spin Master’s Co-Founder, Ronnen Harary, Laura Clunie, Toni Stevens and the Emmy Award winning Jennifer Oxley (Peg + Cat, Wonder Pets) who also acts as showrunner, the series is created by Emmy Award Winner Dustin Ferrer (Esme & Roy, Peg+Cat) and will be animated by Toronto-based Jam Filled Entertainment.

Spin Master Entertainment is orchestrating a strategic global franchise roll-out and will lead consumer products cross-category licensing worldwide, starting with toys in 2024. Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana has been secured as the exclusive licensing and merchandising representative for the brand in Canada and France.

“The classic and familiar world of Vida the Vet, with its beautiful 2D artwork and core theme of nurturing love for all animals, is the perfect property to extend across all facets of children’s lives,” says André Lake Mayer, Spin Master’s SVP, Global Strategic Partnerships & Consumer Products. “We are excited to activate our growing consumer products enterprise with a fresh new property that will resonate within all key categories and regions and through strategic partnerships and promotions worldwide.”

Nelvana and TIME Studios to develop preschool animation Leela’s Island

Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana and TIME Studios Kids and Family, the recently announced kids and family programming division of the Emmy Award-winning TIME Studios, have teamed up to develop the new original preschool series Leela’s Island.

Marking the first development partnership between the two renowned companies, and the first preschool content deal for TIME Studios, the animated comedy-adventure series features a curious five-year-old girl named Leela who discovers she has inherited a gift that allows her to transform into any animal she wishes and see the world through its eyes, in the process gaining a new point of view on her own problems.

Leela’s Island is a show that will help kids learn to see the world from others’ perspectives. Featuring one of the first Afro-Latina girls in an animated preschool series, Leela’s Island will go far in addressing the lack of representation in children’s content both in front and behind the camera,” says Maria Perez-Brown, Head of Kids and Family, TIME Studios. “We’re so excited to collaborate with Nelvana to bring this important preschool property to life.”

Leela’s Island is created and written by a team of diverse storytellers, including award-winning writer Fracaswell Hyman (Gullah Gullah Island, Taina, Little Bill, and The Famous Jett Jackson) and Maria Perez-Brown (Gullah Gullah Island and Taina), developed in partnership with writer Janice Burgess (The Backyardigans).

“We are incredibly passionate about Leela’s Island and believe Leela will become an icon for kids around the world,” says Athena Georgaklis, Head of Development, Nelvana. “The calibre of talent behind this project is unmatched, and is evident in the series’ perfect blend of heartwarming, magical moments and fierce, empowered storytelling. Working with the team at TIME has been a true highlight.”

Rowing Blazers x Babar debut “Fait du Ski” capsule

Rowing Blazers has teamed up once again with Nelvana, the international producer, distributor and licensor of children’s animated and live action content, and The Clifford Ross Company, to deliver another collection of distinctive pieces featuring the legendary literary character Babar: a ski-inspired capsule inspired by the 1966 book Babar Fait du Ski.

The book’s illustrations, along with Babar’s own unique style in the story, provided the inspiration behind Rowing Blazers’ latest collaboration with Babar.

“Some of my favourite Babar illustrations are those of Babar skiing,” says Jack Carlson, Founder & CEO of Rowing Blazers. “I’ve wanted to produce a Babar ski capsule for a long time, both creating ski and après pieces emblazoned with the illustrations, as well as recreating pieces from the books themselves, like Babar’s geometric ski jumper, matching mittens, and his red hat with the ear flaps (how were they supposed to cover his elephant ears anyway?). That’s what we’ve done in this collection, and it’s one of my favourite collections we’ve ever produced!”

The Rowing Blazers x Babar Fait du Ski collection consists of a cotton twill dad hat; a polar fleece hat; lambswool beanies, mittens and sweaters; French terry loopback sweats; a winter jacket; a deep-pile sherpa fleece; heavyweight rugbies; a tee shirt; a canvas bag and a nylon jacket. Each piece features ski-related imagery from the beloved children’s books.

Highlights from the unisex capsule include the Babar Ski Team Patch Sweater, which is a special recreation – made from 100% lambswool – of the sweater Babar wears in the book; a Windbreaker that features a Babar Fait du Ski print, rib knit cuffs and hem, and side-entry pockets, and a Polar Fleece made from deep-pile sherpa fleece and designed with the Babar Fait du Ski pattern.

“We’ve seen massive success with our past Babar collections from Rowing Blazers, which is a true testament to the icon Babar has become since it was first introduced to the world 90 years ago,” says Mellany Masterson, Head of Nelvana Enterprises. “We’re excited to be partnering with Rowing Blazers once again on the new Babar Fait du Ski collection; another line that perfectly embodies the spirit and style of Babar.”

The Rowing Blazers x Babar Fait Du Ski capsule is available now at rowingblazers.com. Prices range from U.S. $48-$398 / U.K.  £40 – £390.

Thomas & Friends goes 2D animated as new seasons given the green light by Mattel

Mattel has given the green light to a series of 104 new 11 minute episodes and two hour-long specials for the Thomas & Friends television series over two new seasons. The latest update for the popular children’s series follows news released last week that a Thomas & Friends feature length film was now in development.

To produce the two new seasons of the hit pre-school series, Mattel has partnered with Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Studios, an international producer and distributor of children’s animated and live-action content. The new seasons, starting with Season 25, will premiere next autumn.

The firm has hinted at ‘a creative new approach to the show,’ which promises to ‘contemporise the series for today’s families.’

The series will be animated in 2D, for a start, and will build upon creative elements that have resonated with Thomas & Friends fans over the year by featuring comedic, playful stories and lessons told from Thomas’ point of view. Nelvana will help to bring the new 2D look to life, expanding on Mattel’s existing relationship with Corus Entertainment.

“Thomas & Friends’ enduring legacy and focus on the importance on friendship continue to resonate with global audiences, and we look forward to unveiling our new content to consumers next year,” said Fred Soulie, senior vice president and general manager, Mattel Television.

“Nelvana is the ideal production partner for the series, understanding the importance of staying true to Thomas’ ethos and heritage while bringing the franchise to life creatively in new ways for today’s kids.”

Pam Westman, president, Nelvana, added: “As the exclusive broadcast partner and licensing agent of the treasured Thomas brand in Canada, we are delighted to deepen our relationship with Mattel by becoming their production partner on the re-imagined 2D series, which will introduce Thomas to a new generation of young audiences.

“With stunning animation and fresh new stories, the 2D series allows us to play up the humor in the show while honoring the legacy of the world’s most-adored blue tank engine.”

Executive producers for Season 25 of Thomas & Friends include Fred Soulie, Adam Bonnett and Christopher Keenan at Mattel, as well as Colin Bohm and Pam Westman at Nelvana.

Thomas was first created in 1945 by Rev. W. Awdry in stories for his son, Christopher. Today, the character is just as beloved by children as he was when he first chugged down the tracks. Thomas’ stories are currently told through the television series, toys, books, apps, live events and more.
