Warner Bros’ The LEGO Movie has stormed to the top of the US box office in its first weekend on release.
The LEGO Movie made an estimated $69.1m, while its closest competition, George Clooney’s The Monuments Men, charted in second place with $22.7m.
This debut also marks the second biggest opening of all time for the month of February in the US, beaten only by The Passion of the Christ’s $83.8m debut in February 2004.
"I think this sends a signal that we are very interested in this space," said Warner Bros domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman.
"You will be hearing more from us, and we will definitely be talking very shortly about our plans for LEGO."
