Just three of the year’s top 25 worldwide grossing movies so far have been original properties.
The top three of the year have been Jurassic World. Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, while the only film not based on a pre-existing property to crack the top ten this year is Disney’s Inside Out.
The rest of the top ten is made up of sequels like Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, book adaptations like Fifty Shades of Grey and The Martian, reimaginings like Cinderella and brand spin-offs like Minions.
Visual effects artist and supervisor Todd Vaziri spotted that the other two films not based on an existing brand to make the list are disaster movie San Andreas in 12th and Adam Sandler comedy Pixels in at 25th.
It’s of course in no way a new trend. There was only one film in last year’s worldwide top ten that was an original property: Interstellar.
