US: Netflix boosts children’s offering with Sony Pictures Animation deal

Netflix has agreed a deal with Sony Pictures Television to bring Sony Pictures Animation feature films to Netflix US members.

The deal covers one or two films per year, and the first films to land on the streaming site in 2014 are Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Smurfs 2.

Netflix signed the deal after pay channel Starz ended its multi-year agreement with Sony for kid’s movies.

Despite giving up Sony’s animation offering, Starz will remain the exclusive pay TV home of Sony Pictures Entertainment feature titles through 2021 and will continue to offer its subscribers Sony’s live action movies.
