A free Animal Planet Bookshelf has arrived on the App Store in the UK and Latin America.

The free download - for iOS 5 or higher - acts as a digital library of interactive content that will be constantly updated with new Animal Planet stories and activities.

It arrived courtesy of Discovery Enterprises International (DEI) and LivoBooks. There are also plans underway to launch the app in the Asia Pacific region.

The launch follows the ‘Doki’s Bookshelf’ app, which brought Discovery Kids’ character Doki and friends to iOS devices, as part of a strategic digital publishing strategy from DEI.

Available now in the Animal Planet Bookshelf is the Meerkats storytelling and activity app. There's also the Activity Book which includes activities for children, such as puzzles, memory games and colouring pages, all with touch-screen interactive features. A Sharks app is in the works, too/

The Animal Planet Bookshelf provides shortcuts for sampling and buying storytelling and activity apps. Each app has a free sample version for a limited time.

Apps will be available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. A second roll-out in Russian, Italian and German is scheduled for late summer.

Nicolas Bonard, Senior Vice President for DEI, commented: “We’re very excited by the launch of the Animal Planet Bookshelf in the UK and Latin America, with more markets to follow.

"Our engaging content lends itself to digital publishing formats, and we know that consumers are looking to enjoy our brands across multiple platforms. Apps also facilitate learning, developing creative and thinking skills through interactivity – which make them a perfect fit with Discovery’s core mission.

"Digital publishing is a core part of our licensing strategy and it’s great to have LivoBooks on board as our global licensing partner to drive it forward.”
