Best selling video games franchise, Mass Effect is being turned into an anime feature film.

Publisher Electronic Arts and its Bioware division will be working with Funimation Entertainment - a distributor of Japanese animation in the US - and Tokyo-based production company, TO Entertainment on the project.

Digital and home video releases will follow in summer 2012.

"Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media," said Casey Hudson, executive producer for the Mass Effect series. "Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us."

The original Mass Effect game and its sequel have received over 250 awards and 100 perfect '10' scores from critics worldwide.
