The video games market has turned things on its head once again as it was revealed that women will spend £1.1bn on gaming titles over the next year.

A new study conducted by Barclays Corporate Banking has revealed that female fans of the entertainment medium will account for almost a third of spend on videogames and accessories this year.

The same study discovered that women are also more likely to play videogames alone than men.

Mobile phones have been detailed as the most popular gaming platform, with 53 per cent of the surveyed gamers playing games on mobile currently, while VR headsets are the type of kit British gamers are most likely to invest in over the next two years.

The new results could go some way to challenge current preconceptions of the gamers market and in turn counter many licensing firms’ approach to merchandising some of the most popular gaming titles.
