Virtual world MiniMonos to shut down

Children’s eco-friendly online virtual world MiniMonos will shut down on Sunday, May 12th.

The monkey-themed site reached its millionth member last summer before making its debut at Brand Licensing Europe.

It teamed up with InComm last year for eco-friendly membership cards and entered the mobile gaming space just last month.

The site is planning some ‘big events’ this weekend and an in-game party to see the site off on May 12th.

A message on the MiniMonos website read: "It is with great sadness that I must announce the closure of the online virtual world, as of Sunday, May 12th 2013.

"MiniMonos has been a huge joy and massive amounts of work by many people. We can no longer keep the world going, and develop apps that we are so excited about at the same time.

"Everyday for the last four years we have been delighted, moved, and inspired by the community of kids who are part of MiniMonos. Our team has worked so hard to make the world what it is because we are excited by what kids can do to make the world a better place.

"We are really sad to say goodbye to the virtual world, but super excited about what a difference you will make in the real world."

Almost 1,500 MiniMonos users had eco-projects approved, helping to adopt orangutans, make donations to several animal charities, provide clean water for kids in India and more.

The site had its own organic web store selling apparel and accessories.
