Warner Bros named UK’s top distributor in 2013

Warner Bros UK has been named the number one film distributor in the UK, according to Rentrak figures.

It marks the third time in four years that Warner Bros has claimed the position, grossing £194m from January 1st to December 31st 2013.

This means Warner Bros had 16 per cent market share, largely thanks to the likes of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’s grossing £32.9m and counting, as well as Man of Steel’s £29.9m, Gravity’s £27.3m The Hangover Part III’s £19.3m and The Conjuring’s £10.4m.

"We’re thrilled to be named the U.K.’s number one film distributor for the third time in four years, a first for any studio here in the UK," said Josh Berger, president and managing director, Warner Bros UK, Ireland and Spain.

"2013 was one of the most tightly contested years in recent memory, and the result was only confirmed in December, following the standout performances of the hit British movie Gravity and the Christmas smash The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

"This magnificent achievement is down to the creativity and expertise of our filmmaking colleagues and our market-leading team."

The studio is confident of success in 2014, with the likes of Godzilla, The Hobbit: There and Back Again and Interstellar on the way.

"Our 2014 film slate looks as rich and diverse as ever, with something to appeal to everyone," added Berger.

"What’s particularly exciting is the arrival of the first two movies to be produced at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden since it opened in June 2012 – the Doug Liman sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and the Wachowski siblings’ Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum."
